Video “We want to know your opinion on neuro-enhancement”

The video to promote the citizen debate on neuro-enhancement SuperMI is online. The debate has taken place at CosmoCaixa Barcelona on November the 13th in which researchers, business representatives and experts on the field of sanitary law explained what neuro-enhancement is, its applications are its regulatory legislation. See the programme.

Before the event, we have walked around Barcelona to ask pedestrians on the topic. They may have never heard of the word “neuro-enhancement” but have their opinions clear on its uses and limitations, especially when applied on humans (children, adults, the elderly, healthy or sick people, etc). The video is in Spanish and Catalan language.

Imatge1New date for the next SuperMI! The second Spanish public debate about neuro-enhancement will take place at CosmoCaixa- Barcelona at 18:30h, on November the 13th. This field of research and innovation focused on improving cognitive capacities in healthy people (i.e., to have a better memory, to focus more, to calculate faster, etc), will be discussed globally. Get involved in this innovative debate and share your thoughts!

UPF presents the Decide kit “Non Therapeutic Neuro-Enhancement”, a different way to discuss

PlayDecide (2)A new Decide Kit about neuro-enhancement, called Non therapeutic Neuro-Enhancement, is online. It was developed by Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) within the framework of the European NERRI project (Neuro-Enhancement Responsible Research and Innovation). Two members of the Spanish Committee of Support to the Responsible Research and Innovation in Neuro-Enhancement have collaborated as experts: Carmen Casado, specialist in medical technologies´ regulation, and Mara Dierssen, Senior Scientist (CRG) at Centre for Biomedical Research on Rare Diseases (CIBERER) and President of the Spanish Society for Neuroscience (SENC).

NERRI project on “Gray Matters”, a report commissioned by President Obama

graymattersThe European project NERRI (Neuroenhancement Responsible Research and Innovation), in which  the Science Communication Observatory from Universitat Pompeu Fabra (OCC-UPF) takes part, was mentioned in the last report of the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues (Presidential Bioethics Commission) of the United States of America. This is an advisory panel constituted by some of the U.S.´ leaders in medicine, science, ethics, religion, law, and engineering. The Presidential Bioethics Commission advises the President Barack Obama on bioethical issues arising from advances in biomedicine and related areas of science and technology.

Success of the neuroenhancement public debate at MUNCYT

In the event, which is part of the European project NERRI (Neuroenhancement Responsible Research and Innovation) of the Science Communication Observatory from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (OCC-UPF), presentations by Casto Rivadulla, Stephen Dunne and Carmen Casado, along with Consuelo Bautista as moderator, made us ask, discuss, and reflect on neuro-enhancement.
