On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the EC-US Task Force on Biotechnology Research, European and United States’ scientists will discuss a vision for the future of biotechnology research, the bioeconomy and its applications for the benefit of society. The conference Biotechnology Research for a Complex World aims to challenging the scientific communities on both side of the Atlantic.

Its objective is to expand their thinking beyond specific scientific disciplines and jointly identify the greatest societal challenge in the next 20 years for which scientific transatlantic collaboration could accelerated the way forward to find solutions.

The conference will address issues such as emerging infectious diseases, alternatives to fossil fuels, clean -up operation of the environment, food security and healthier food. This conference is part of the programme of the Spanish Presidency of the EU Council. It is organised in collaboration with the European Commission, DG Research and EC-US Task Force on Biotechnology Research .

Since 1990 the European Commission, the White House Office of Science and Technologies and US agencies funding biotechnology research (NSF, USDA, NIH, DOE, EPA…) have been collaborating in the framework of EC-US Task Force on Biotechnology Research. The Task Force seeks to anticipate the needs of tomorrow’s science today by exchange ideas among administrators and programme managers on the future directions of biotechnology research and development of common activities involving the scientific communities on both side of the Atlantic.
